For a very short period (1882-1885), Chaplet produced a series of brown stoneware pieces which constituted a radical change from contemporary ceramics.
19th centuryHe decided to leave the raw material of the vase partially bare, something he perceived as being of value in its own right. Most often he called on external artists, such as Dammouse, Hexamer and Ringel, who often signed these pieces and decorated them in a Japonist or realist style.
These creations did not receive as much commercial success as anticipated and production was rapidly abandoned.
The Petit Palais already has several of Chaplet’s brown stoneware pieces (a flower pot holder, a large rouleau vase and a small jug). Doctor Engel’s generous donation allows us to add to this collection.
